The innate immune system is the first line of defense against initial environmental challenges and injury and is activated much more rapidly than the adaptive immune system. Liver inflammation and necrosis can generally cause liver diseases. Many diseases can affect the liver, including alcoholic, fatty, drug-induced and viral hepatitis. Hepatocytes comprise 60%–80% of all liver cells, and they conduct the metabolic, biosynthetic, detoxification and biliary secretory functions of the liver. The liver is strategically positioned between the intestine and the circulatory system and is continuously exposed to bacterial products, toxins and food-derived antigens.
